Within Nazi Germany Zwangsarbeiter program, Zeiss used forced labour including persecution of Jews along with other minorities during World War II. The destruction of the war caused many companies to divide into smaller subcompanies and others to merge. There is great respect for the engineering innovation that arrived of Dresden—before the war the world’s first 35 mm single-lens reflex camera, the Kine Exakta, and the initial miniature camera with good picture quality were developed there. A variety of events and products commemorate the 150th anniversary of the Carl-Zeiss-Stiftung . A number of these events were noted at our “Current Zeiss News” WEBSITE page. The original instrument was made to reflect the sky above Munich and it created this type of sensation that Zeiss was giving demonstrations to military, ocean navigational companies and countless others there.
- Schott’s work in his native town of Witten had by 1881 led to glass products with optical properties that around that time have been unknown.
- This left Ernst Abbe as the sole owner of the business then with 250 employees and craftsmen.
Aachen, and later at the universities of Wijrzbur and Leipzig. Schott later earned his Doctorate at the University of Jena in 1875 for his work about defects in window glass manufacturing.

Zeiss Ikon were without designs or facilities for making the Contax and set about producing an improved replacement. They were named the Contax IIa and IIIa, and were smaller and lighter than the original designs. But by the time the IIa and IIIa hit the market, they faced strong competition from many European and Asian brands, notably the visually similar Nikon which was a top quality camera sharing exactly the same lens-mount & most of the features.
Those in Jena were still subjects of the Duke of Anhalt, in the Grand Duchy of Saxe-Weimar, in the German Empire, but their world was in just a matter of years about to change forever. The production of prism binoculars by Zeiss commenced in 1894 with their introduction of the 4x 11 mm, a 6x 15 mm, and 8x 20 mm models. Today, manufacturing costs alone could not justify the move from Oberkochen to Oume. But the strong demand from japan market for Contax lenses would again result in the de-cision, to manufacture them where the majority of the customers are anyway. Zeiss’ first compound microscopes were offered in his 5th, 1858, price list. Zeiss Industrial Metrology focuses on high-accuracy measurement systems, including coordinate-measuring machines , computed tomography measurement machines (non-medical), optical measuring equipment, metrology software and measurement sensor systems.
