Our doctors and staff provided free eye exams and glasses for the cadets from the spring class. Our July coin drive and Denim Day fundraiser raised over $165 to aid Lions Eye Foundation! Our very own Dr. Chow serves on the board of the nonprofit organization which provides no cost eye surgery, medication, and other care to low income and uninsured individuals throughout Northern California. Our 6th Annual College Scholarship contest featured eight outstanding local students who were nominated by teachers, youth leaders, and pastors. Based on feedback from the nominee’s family and friends, Brookside’s doctors selected Jayden Jones as the winner of the $1,000 college scholarship. Jayden was students at Edison SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL and you will be attending Clark Atlanta University in the fall as a preferred football walk-on. He plans to major in Psychology and be an Athletic Counselor so he can help youth succeed not just in sports but in all aspects of life.
We gave back during the holiday season by collecting coats and blankets to contribute to the homeless and our four-legged friends at the Delta Humane Society. We collected TEDDIES for the Stockton Heat’s annual Teddy Bear Toss in January. We supported local restaurants during this pandemic with something special card giveaway to Market Tavern. Brookside Optometric Group supported the Women’s Center by wearing jeans today for Denim Day honoring Sexual Assault Awareness Month . Dr. Richard Vanover is a graduate of the University of California, Berkeley School of Optometry. Dr. Rosemary Melrose has practiced optometry in Stockton with her husband, Robert, since 1982.

Summerfest 2017 raised almost $11,000 for three nonprofit Humanitarian Eyecare Groups that Dr. Demshar volunteers his time with to supply eye exams and glasses. The annual event supports the St. Mary’s Homeless Shelter Medical Clinic, the Central Valley Flying Samaritans, and Lions in Sight. Dr. Leila Chow and Dr. Bob Melrose volunteered at the Tzu Chi mobile vision clinic to greatly help the residents of Boggs Tract making use of their vision care needs. The screening provided free exams and glasses for all of the patients. We sponsored our fourth annual $1000 College Scholarship Contest for local San Joaquin County students.

Dr. Bob Melrose traveled to Pakistan with his Rotary District and caused local Pakistan Rotarians to vaccinate hundreds of children against polio. We supported the Stockton Kings by giving way two tickets to the November 19 Kings vs Santa Cruz Warriors game. Dr. Bob participated in the 2nd Annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. This annual event supports Health and Wellness programs in the Stockton/San Joaquin area.

The DCA can be an amazing group making phenomenal changes in the lives of the cadets they serve, and we are honored to possess a small part in this program. Dr. Demshar flew with the Flying Samaritans to two healthcare clinics in San Felipe, Mexico and something in San Quintin, Baja to supply eye care for a large number of people in need. We continued our ongoing partnership with Discovery Challenge Academy in Lathrop!
There are multiple medicare related identifications for medicare providers. Brookside Optometric Group staff participated in the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk on October 8. Our office matched all donations made to the American Cancer Society in support of we and the fight against cancer. Honoring Breast Cancer Awareness Month, our office staff wore pink on October 14 to stand together, united against breast cancer, also to raise money for breast cancer research. A group of four doctors (including our very own Dr. Demshar) and seven technicians from Lions around the corner examined 700 patients throughout a weekend in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico. We supported the Stockton Symphony through the holidays and gave away two tickets to the December 10 Holiday Pops Concert.
Dr. Demshar and a group from Lions around the corner of California and Nevada traveled to the La Paz/Cabo area because of their first clinic mission of the year. The team examined more than 2,000 patients through the weeklong vision clinic. We supported the UOP men’s basketball team by giving away two tickets to the January 25 UOP vs Gonzaga game. Dr. Demshar and two other Flying Samaritans flew to Ensenada, Mexico to participate in a Friends In Sight Vision Clinic. The doctors examined 750 patients and prescribed eyeglasses along with referrals for Cataracts, Glaucoma, and Diabetic and Hypertensive Retinopathy.
