Why are progressive lenses hourglass shape?
The IOT Basic series offers 100% Backside Add, Base Curve Comps and basic Aspheric design… I ordered Havana color which appeared to have some blue color on the net page image. Didn’t realize this until I was asked to do this review. I have had these glasses for approximately 2 weeks and I have to say, they are great looking and a great fit. I tried the no-line glasses, however they didn’t work with me.
Progressive lenses were first introduced in the 1990’s as a new prescription lenses product that offers multifocal vision “without the line”. Lens companies realized that aging customers did not like other people seeing the visible bifocal line for cosmetic purposes. Therefore the progressive “no-line” lens was invented, and promoted well under the most famous brand name, Varilux. Progressive lenses are named as the lens “progresses” from one viewing area to some other, erasing the line that is the hallmark of bifocals. Matching a lens’s inherent strengths to a patient’s unique needs, lifestyle and Rx can tremendously improve patient satisfaction and reduce non-adapts. Many people arrived at L&F and have us whether or not they need progressive lenses in their eyeglasses. Thus we thought we’d take the time here to describe what progressive lenses are and how they are able to help you see clearly throughout your day.

In my practice, I heavily rely on Varilux® lenses. Refers to the quantity of lens power for astigmatism. If nothing appears in this column, either you have no astigmatism, or your astigmatism is indeed slight that it’s not really necessary to correct it with your eyeglass lenses. A mirrored coating can be put on the lens. This sort of lens is an option to polarization for UV protection. However, the colour of the mirrored surface is irrelevant to the color of the lens.

“Hard” and “soft” are the two main types of progressive lens design. Both refer to the amount of blur located at the peripheral blending zones. Soft lenses spread the blending zones out into the distance and reading portions of the lens.Click image to enlarge. I had some bifocal lenses cut so that the focal point matches the distance to my instruments and GPS. I had the lenses made of coated plastic and mounted in some springy metal frames. If I want sun glare protection I have to wear sun glasses and forego any reading of data.

If your prescription is for bifocals or trifocals of progressive lenses, there can be additional information on the prescription that says for example Add +2.50. This is important information in case you are ordering reading or multifocal lenses. The numbers are expressed in diopters that tells the power of the lens. A diopter is really a value that is metric and universal worldwide. Progressive lenses provide capability of multifocal lenses, but minus the visible line. However, progressive lenses are much harder to use and to adapt to than bifocal or trifocal prescription glasses, and they are much more expensive.
Distance glasses on the other hand, focus too far away and leave things using the pc screen blurry. Bifocals don’t help because they are just a distance lens at the top with a near lens below.
The way a traditional progressive is designed you need to look directly at — or point your nose or chin at what you need to see. The easiest way to observe how this works is to get some good reading material in front of you and look at it. Without moving your mind, move your eyes along the lens until you find a spot that brings the image into focus. This helps train your brain and in no time, you will be carrying it out automatically without thinking. If you could see the vision in a normal progressive lens, shown in the illustration below, you’ll see an hourglass shape in the lens. Did you know, the image outside the hourglass/corridor can seem distorted? With a progressive lens there is distortion down and out to the sides.
I was really skeptical about this OmniLux lens, which promised “continuous, sharp, natural vision at any gaze from distance to near without waves or distortions. There is absolutely no adaptation period.” I had tried progressive lens twice, and every time had to abandon it because I wasn’t able to adapt. I finally had to settle on ‘occupational computer lens’ which may allow me to see intermediate to near distant. It could be the “brand” you can find so many different “brands” and some are way better then your other. The “cheaper” the brand may be the less vision you will have. Progressives are shaped like an hour glass the top being for distance, the middle for your inter.
My huge sunglasses, otoh, are excellent for seeing. Next time, I’ll get larger indoor frames to insure there’s plenty of room for my seamless bifocal prescription. I have already been wearing progressives for a couple years now and to me it sounds like the line between near and far is too lower in the lens. I know the change is supposed to be gradual nonetheless it appears like they started the transition too low on the lens which would absolutely mess up your depth perception. It shouldn’t take more than a week or so to regulate and if you’re falling then something should be done. I would take them to someone else and see what they say about the progression.
Work great during the day, but a lot more peripheral blurry at night. In the interest of transparency and fairness, Tyler does desire to point out that at SportRx we do not currently sell progressives for computers. Eyeglass Tyler explains everything you need to know about progressives in the video below. Return them within 45 days for a full refund or exchange.
