In nov 2013, the BAC convened to prepare for working out and care of a new mascot on campus. The youngest “Jack” found its way to October, a generous gift from champion bulldog breeder and Hoya parent Janice Hochstetler. The most recognized figures on campus, Jack the Bulldog spends his time celebrating life on the Hilltop and cheering for Hoya sports. When not occupied along with his mascot duties, Jack resides in a Georgetown townhouse with caretaker McKenzie Stough (C’13). Because the Georgetown student body became more diverse, coverage of minority student groups increased and articles on the activities and concerns of African American and the Jewish students appeared. Women’s athletics received more detailed coverage, as did the impact of Title IX, and, by the finish of the decade, references to “girls” and “hoyettes” had been eliminated from the sports pages.

The change was found by local writers as basketball season began, and Hoyas became the state Georgetown nickname within a few years. Students maintained pet bulldogs as mascots into the early 1970’s. By 1979, Georgetown was among the first schools to employ a “human mascot,” students in the now familiar blue and gray bulldog suit.
